Donald Trump went on a Truth Social rant on Friday, after Canada aired an advert that includes former President Ronald Reagan talking negatively about tariffs.
Trump accused Canada of trying to influence a pending U.S. Supreme Court case that may trigger bother for many of his tariffs, including ones in Canada. In a post, Trump said the nation “cheated and got caught!!!”
“They fraudulently took a big buy ad saying that Ronald Reagan did not like Tariffs, when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY,” the president wrote. “Canada is trying to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court in one of the most important rulings in the history of our Country.”
His statements come after the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute said the advert misrepresented a presidential radio tackle Reagan delivered in April 1987.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said last week that the province would spend $75 million to run the advertisements in the United States. “And we’re going to repeat that message to every Republican district there is right across the entire country,” said Ford, who described himself as a “big Ronald Reagan fan.”
Ford shared the advert on X, saying that the province would use “every tool we have, we’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada. The way to prosperity is by working together.”
In the advert, Reasgan is heard saying, “When someone says, ‘Let’s impose tariffs on foreign imports,’ it looks like they’re doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs.”

Trump’s tariffs have been the centerpiece of his second time period in the White House. This is the second time that Trump said he was ending commerce talks with Canada.
On June 27, the president said the U.S. was “terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada” after Ottawa imposed a digital providers tax on American tech companies, which Canada rescinded two days later.
