Poland says it has purpose to consider Russia was behind an explosion on a railroad line close to the Ukrainian border over the weekend.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the alleged Russian assault as “an unprecedented act of sabotage.” The damage was found on Sunday morning, when a train conductor about 100km outside of Warsaw was forced to make an emergency stop. Tusk revealed in a statement that this route was “crucially important for delivering assist to Ukraine.”

There were no casualties in the attack, but Polish citizens are on high alert.

Two suspects have been identified this morning, with Tusk revealing they are two Ukrainians who “had been working with Russian intelligence for a long time.”

They are said to have fled to Belarus, which is among Russia’s biggest European allies. One of the suspected attackers is said to have previously been convicted of another sabotage in Lviv, a Ukrainian city just off the Polish border.

This morning, Polish security officials are making their suspicions public, with spokesperson Jacek Dobrzynski reporting that authorities are actively “securing evidence, gathering info, and verifying the data they’ve gathered so far.” They believe the attack was likely intended to blow up the train itself.

Dobrzynski said that Russia “needs to shake our society, they need to scare us,” including “Russian intelligence wants to destabilise Poland and the European Union, to set us against Ukraine.”

This isn’t the first assault on Polish soil since the start of the struggle in Ukraine. Poland has skilled a number of arson and other varieties of sabotage in latest years, including parcel bombings. 

“These events show that the people behind it have decided to begin a new phase of threatening the railway infrastructure,” Special Services Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said.

While not confirmed to be related, Polish officers are investigating another incident that occurred 19 miles additional south on the same day, on the same railway, where a prepare packed with 475 passengers had to make an emergency stop due to broken overhead energy traces. 

“You are aware that those who commissioned (the sabotage) — and everything indicates that these are Russian intelligence services — would very much like to know in which direction the proceedings conducted by the police and internal security agencies are heading,” Siemoniak added. 

This morning, Poland held a National Security Committee assembly with navy commanders, heads of companies, and a consultant of the president to talk about the assault.
