Senate Follows House Lead, Unanimously Approves | Political News

After all the hubbub, one may call the Senate’s latest transfer anti-climactic, but the higher chamber agreed by unanimous consent late Tuesday afternoon to approve the invoice handed by the House earlier in the day to require the Department of Justice to release the Epstein information.

No Senate Republicans blocked an attempt to pressure a vote on a decision that would compel the release of paperwork and information associated to Jeffrey Epstein.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., made good on his vow to pressure a vote on the decision just hours after it handed through the House behind a close to unanimous wave of assist.

Schumer argued on the ground that the Senate “should pass this bill as soon as possible, as written and without a hint of delay.”

And so they did.

Okay, technically, the House vote was not unanimous — it was 427-1, with Republican Rep. Clay Higgins (LA-3) the lone holdout, asserting

I’ve been a principled “NO” on this invoice from the start. What was unsuitable with the invoice three months in the past is still unsuitable today. It abandons 250 years of prison justice process in America. As written, this invoice reveals and injures hundreds of harmless people – witnesses, people who offered alibis, relations, and many others. If enacted in its current type, this kind of broad reveal of prison investigative information, launched to a rabid media, will completely outcome in harmless people being harm. Not by my vote. The Oversight Committee is conducting a thorough investigation that has already launched properly over 60,000 pages of paperwork from the Epstein case. That effort will continue in a method that supplies all due protections for harmless Americans. If the Senate amends the invoice to correctly deal with privateness of victims and other Americans, who are named but not criminally implicated, then I’ll vote for that invoice when it comes back to the House.

Higgins’ misgivings however, the invoice will head straight to President Trump’s desk as soon as the House sends it over to the Senate. The president has already indicated he’ll signal the invoice.

So then, the query turns into: What occurs next? Well, per the textual content of the invoice, the attorney normal is required to, within 30 days, “make publicly available in a searchable and downloadable format all unclassified records, documents, communications, and investigative materials in the possession of the Department of Justice, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and United States Attorneys’ Offices” pertaining to Epstein, subject to sure exceptions set out in subsection “c” of the invoice:

(1) The Attorney normal could withhold or redact the segregable parts of data that—

  • (A) include personally identifiable info of victims or victims’ personal and medical information and related information the disclosure of which might represent a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privateness;
  • (B) depict or include baby inappropriate abuse supplies (CSAM) as outlined under 18 U.S.C. 2256 and prohibited under 18 U.S.C. 2252–2252A;
  • (C) would jeopardize an lively federal investigation or ongoing prosecution, offered that such withholding is narrowly tailor-made and momentary;
  • (D) depict or include photographs of death, bodily abuse, or injury of any particular person; or
  • (E) include info particularly licensed under standards established by an Executive order to be saved secret in the curiosity of national protection or overseas coverage and are in fact correctly categorised pursuant to such Executive order.
