President Donald Trump paid a particular tribute to the late Reverend Jesse Jackson during a reception celebrating Black History Month at the White House on Wednesday.
Trump said he knew Jackson “very well” as he delivered his remarks in the East Room. “Jesse was a piece of work, I want to tell you. He was a piece of work, but he was a good man.”
“He was a real hero,” the president continued. “I just need to pay my highest respects to Reverend Jesse Jackson. He was a good man.” Trump said that once somebody received to know Jackson, he received better and better.
Trump’s feedback had been shared on X, with many people accusing the president of insulting the late civil rights icon. “He obviously didn’t want to pay tribute to Jesse Jackson, but someone convinced him he should, or at least pretend to try,” wrote one individual. Another individual said Trump was “incapable of doing the right thing.”
“Trump is a piece of something,” wrote another individual. “Hint: it ain’t work.”

Trump’s feedback comply with his assertion commemorating Jackson. Whilst he praised him, Trump also took the chance to air his grievances against former President Barack Obama, whom he claimed Jackson didn’t like.
“The Reverend Jesse Jackson is Dead at 84. I knew him well, long before becoming President. He was a good man, with lots of personality, grit, and “avenue smarts. ” He was very gregarious – Someone who truly loved people! Despite the fact that I am falsely and consistently called a discriminatory by the Scoundrels and Lunatics on the Radical Left, Democrats ALL, it was always my pleasure to help Jesse along the way,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump’s prolonged post continued: “I provided office space for him and his Rainbow Coalition, for years, in the Trump Building at 40 Wall Street; Responded to his request for help in getting CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM passed and signed, when no other President would even try; Single handedly pushed and passed long term funding for Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), which Jesse loved, but also, which other Presidents would not do; Responded to Jesse’s support for Opportunity Zones, the single most successful economic development package yet approved for Black business men/women, and much more.

“Jesse was a pressure of nature like few others before him. He had a lot to do with the Election, without acknowledgment or credit, of Barack Hussein Obama, a man who Jesse couldn’t stand. He cherished his household drastically, and to them I ship my deepest sympathies and condolences. Jesse will probably be missed! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Trump and Jesse Jackson maintained a long-standing relationship, despite recent political disagreements. In 1999, Trump briefly explored a presidential run on the Reform Party ticket, receiving the endorsement of Jackson, who initially viewed Trump’s business background and “willingness to work together with minority communities” favorably.
Jackson’s perspective on Trump shifted dramatically as he witnessed the reality television personality’s rapid ascent to the presidency, with Jackson ultimately declaring that Trump “seeded these clouds” of division and fear.
Jesse L. Jackson, a former protege of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and two-time presidential contender who championed the Civil Rights Movement for decades following the iconic leader’s assassination, passed away Tuesday. He was 84.

Jackson endorsed Barack Obama during the 2007 campaign, stating in interviews, “He has my vote,” and though his own presidential aspirations were unfulfilled, many attribute Obama’s success to the groundwork Jackson established. Jackson pursued the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, securing 13 primaries and caucuses in 1988.
Jackson spent his life championing causes across the United States and internationally, fighting for the disadvantaged and marginalized on matters ranging from voting rights and employment opportunities to education and healthcare access. He achieved diplomatic successes with global leaders, and through his Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, he transformed calls for Black pride and self-determination into corporate accountability, pushing executives to create a more inclusive and fair America.
During his last months, while receiving round the clock care, he was unable to converse, instead connecting with members of the family and guests by greedy and squeezing their palms.
