Iconic rockers The Who have announced the tragic death of a “true legend” who labored with them on many tours. Taking to Instagram they shared a image of Gordon Torrington who labored on the lighting for their UK and European tours and on numerous reveals for Teenage Cancer Trust. Alongside it they penned a heartfelt tribute: “We are deeply saddened to share the news that our colleague and friend Gordon Torrington has passed away.

“Gordie was a true legend in our industry. He touched so might lives through his work, his character and his presence and will probably be remembered by all who had the privilege of figuring out him. We are all really devastated by this loss. Our ideas, love and heartfelt condolences are with Gordon’s household and family members at this extremely troublesome time. He will probably be sadly missed by everyone linked with Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall and with The Who. Rest in peace, Gordie x.”

The band, which features original members Roger Daltry and Pete Townsend, didn’t reveal a cause of death and it is believed he died some days ago.

Ipswich native Gordon was a Senior Account Manager at Lights Control Rigging who also shared their devastation in a social media post.

“Gordie was a true legend in our industry. He touched so many lives through his work, his character and his presence and will probably be remembered by all who had the privilege of figuring out him. We are all really devastated by this loss. Our ideas, love and heartfelt condolences are with Gordon’s household and family members at this extremely troublesome time,” they wrote.

Fond tributes flooded in for the beloved crew member as friends and colleagues learned the sad news.

Commenting on The Who’s post on Instagram a former colleague wrote: “My first encounter with Gordy was at the @mtv_europe EMAs, where he was half of the incredible @prg_uk workforce. We reconnected at the @teenage_cancer occasions at the @royalalberthall, where he represented @lightscontrolrigging. Gordy served as our crew chief on many @officialthewho reveals, bringing a fun-loving spirit, delight, and frequent tea breaks that made every show really feel like a household reunion. His departure has left us heartbroken, but I’ll always cherish the recollections of him as a kind-hearted gentleman.”

On Facebook another added: “So very unhappy. Gordy you can be so missed. Just heartbreaking news. Deepest condolences to his household and family members.”

A third chimed in: “Gordon Torrington was the best half of all of us industry people. Funny, candy, caring, loyal, good. He beloved a lil boogie on the dance flooring (have evidence), LOVED a Brussel sprout . Gordo was the sort of human you actually, REALLY miss when they’re gone.”

Meanwhile a fourth lamented: “Rest in Peace Gordy. shocking news. You had been a real diamond. Condolences to your loved ones and all who beloved you.”
