The Memorial Tournament ranks among the most prestigious occasions on the golf calendar, a fame constructed on its storied heritage.

The match, conceived by Jack Nicklaus, will boast a $20 million purse, with Scottie Scheffler eyeing a third title this week, which might see him be part of Steve Stricker as the only gamers to obtain that feat since 2011. Yet past the prize money and the attract of competing at Muirfield, there’s another draw that many top PGA Tour gamers eagerly anticipate: the milkshakes.

While this could appear to be a trivial element to spectators watching from home, quite a few stars have spoken glowingly about just how scrumptious the drinks are, with many selecting to share them with buddies and household, additional cementing both the drinks’ and the match’s legendary standing.

“I don’t remember the first one but I remember the last one. Chocolate and peanut butter, the Buckeye. And I can’t wait to finish my day to have another one,” LIV Golf star Joaquin Niemann told Golfweek in 2022. “They’re the best. If I had to choose a place to get a milkshake, it would have to be here.

“There are no better milkshakes anyplace in the world. And they’re free.” Players have 14 flavors to choose from, including options such as Snickers, M&M’s, Twix, and Oreos, reflecting Nicklaus’ well-known sweet tooth.

Competitors can also select chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, or banana bases for their shakes, or craft their own custom creation using the available flavors. That said, the Buckeye, a peanut butter, chocolate syrup, vanilla ice cream with milk, appeared to be the milkshake of choice among players at Muirfield. Jason Day recalled the moment he was first introduced to the milkshakes and has never looked back.

“I bear in mind enjoying The International [at Castle Pines in Colorado] method back in the day,” he said to the outlet. “And I bear in mind, we’re enjoying at altitude, and having a milkshake there and I nearly felt like I used to be going to die because they have been so thick. And they have been so good you could not stop ingesting them.

“And then I had my first one here and it was actually thicker than the one I had at The International. The Buckeye is usually what I get. They are unbelievable.

“I do not know what they do, if they put some particular factor in them, but they’re unbelievable. I’m good for one or two or those this week.”

While the milkshakes have garnered glowing praise from many of golf’s biggest names, one player believes the popular treat fails to live up to the hype: Rory McIlroy.

Speaking to Golfweek in 2022, the star revealed that while he appreciates a milkshake, he won’t go out of his way to indulge beyond what he feels is necessary.

“I assume I do not need to get in bother right here, but like I – just like the milkshakes are good. I’ve had milkshakes that are just as good elsewhere,” McIlroy said to the outlet at the time. “Maybe because it is Muirfield Village, they style better, I do not know.

“I’m happy with having one or two a week. I’m certainly not one of the guys that’s standing there getting two a day.”
