CIA launches covert drone strike on Venezuelan | Political News

The GWN reported on Monday that the CIA carried out a drone strike earlier this month on a port facility on the coast of Venezuela, according to sources.

According to sources acquainted with the matter, the drone strike focused a distant dock on the Venezuelan coast that the U.S. authorities believed was getting used by Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang, to store medication and transfer them onto boats for onward transport. No casualties had been reported, as no one was current at the ability when it was struck, according to the sources.

U.S. Special Operations Forces offered intelligence assist to the operation, sources said, underscoring their continued involvement in the area.

The strike is probably going to escalate tensions between the U.S. and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom the U.S. has positioned a $50 million bounty on and has been pressuring to step down through an aggressive navy marketing campaign.

Since early September, the U.S. has launched strikes destroying more than 30 boats in the Caribbean Sea and the japanese Pacific Ocean in what the U.S. has described as a “counter-narcotics” marketing campaign. President Trump has also ordered a blockade of sanctioned oil tankers coming to and leaving Venezuela, along with repeatedly threatening to perform strikes inside Venezuela.

However, until the CIA assault earlier this month, no U.S. strike was reported inside Venezuela. On Dec. 26, Trump acknowledged in an interview that the U.S. had knocked out some kind of “big facility where ships come from” as he talked about his administration’s marketing campaign against Venezuela. When questioned about it again on Monday, Trump said the U.S. attacked “in the dock space where they load the boats up with medication,” but declined to comment when asked whether the attack was conducted by the military or the CIA.

“So we hit all the boats, and now we hit the area,” Trump said Monday. “It’s the implementation area, that’s where they implement, and that is no longer around.”

According to GWN, one of the sources described the strike as largely symbolic since it attacked just one of many port amenities used by drug traffickers leaving Venezuela. The assault also apparently attracted little or no consideration inside Venezuela.

Earlier this 12 months, Trump expanded the CIA’s authorities to conduct operations in Latin America, including inside Venezuela; however, even then, the U.S. navy only had legal authority to conduct strikes against suspected traffickers at sea, not on land.
