ICE releases statement after family accuses agents | Political News
A person arrested by ICE suffered no accidents in an arrest caught on movie, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), after his family alleged his leg had been run over.
Roofer José Paniagua Calderón, 27, was heading home from work in Vancouver, Washington on December 4 when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents surrounded him, according to his family.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin addressed claims his leg had been run over in a post on X: “Never happened. ICE did NOT run over this illegal alien’s leg. Pure theater. No Injury. After ICE officers applied wrist restraints, Paniagua launched into an Oscar-level performance, dramatically screaming while officers simply moved his vehicle off the roadway.” She continued, “He walked around normally immediately after without issue and received a full medical evaluation including multiple X-rays that showed ZERO fractures, dislocations or injuries.”
Family members told KATU News that Paniagua Calderón was taken into custody at around 12:45 close to 4th Plain and Z Street.
In a fundraiser that has so far raised $21,000, they also alleged that ICE agents shattered his car home windows.
He is being held in the Tacoma ICE detention facility, his family said.
“We still don’t know his condition, how he’s doing, or if he got medical attention,” Paniagua Calderon’s brother, Cristian Paniagua, said. “We don’t know nothing.”
He added that his older brother visited the detention heart on Friday morning, but say he wasn’t ready to see him.

Cristian told KATU that his brother has no prison background.
“He’s a good kid,” Cristian said. “He just works on construction, he does roofing, he goes to church, and then he stays at home. He doesn’t even go out at all.”
“They call us criminals, but they are doing criminal things,” Cristian said. “They’re the ones that are, like, abusing of their power.”
The Vancouver Police Department is now investigating the incident, saying, “Based on the information regarding a vehicle that is alleged to have struck a person within the city limits of Vancouver, per our policy, the Vancouver Police Department will be conducting a traffic investigation to determine the facts.”
