Karoline Leavitt snaps at reporter questioning | Political News

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt blasted a reporter who questioned U.S. President Donald Trump‘s seemingly dismantling the Consumer Product Safety Commission after firing three Democrats on a five-person panel during a press convention on Friday afternoon.

The Hill reported that Trump allegedly fired three Democrats from the panel nominated by his predecessor, Joe Biden: Richard Trumka Jr., Alexander Hoehn-Saric, and Mary Boyle. The CPSC points requirements and bans merchandise that are deemed hazardous to shoppers.

During the briefing, a reporter requested Leavitt, “Yesterday, the administration appeared to have started dismantling the Consumer Product Safety Commission… Does the administration not believe that it’s important to keep toys and cribs off the market?”

The reporter also requested Leavitt to remark on it as a “young mom.”

Leavitt appeared visibly upset and flustered when she stated, “It’s a federal agency within the executive branch. Who’s the head of the executive branch? The president of the United States. He has the right to fire people within the executive branch.”

In a dismissive tone, she added, “It’s a pretty simple answer” before transferring on to one other reporter.

This is, however, unfaithful. While the U.S. president could attempt to take away heads of federal companies or companies themselves, Congress can restrict the facility and make the last word determination.

A leaked memo from the Trump administration in April revealed their plans to dismantle the commission and take up its features within the Department of Health and Human Services, headed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The draft of the alleged HHS 2026 finances proposed eliminating “CPSC and reduce[s] funding for CPSC’s administrative and support functions” while creating a new division within the HHS to perform CPSC’s features.

This transfer was sharply criticized by the National Consumers League.

“America first shouldn’t put product safety last,” stated Daniel Greene, Senior Director of Product Safety and Consumer Protection at the National Consumers League. “The CPSC is enshrined in law as an independent agency with the Congressional mandate to protect the American people from injury and death from hazardous consumer products.”

On Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social, suggesting that the staggering 145% tariffs on China needs to be lowered to 80%.

“80% Tariff on China seems right! Up to Scott B,” he wrote.

Scott B presumably refers to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is scheduled to meet with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Switzerland this weekend to focus on commerce tariffs.

Trump also urged Beijing to open up their markets to the United States.

He wrote on Truth Social: “CHINA SHOULD OPEN UP ITS MARKET TO USA — WOULD BE SO GOOD FOR THEM!!! CLOSED MARKETS DON’T WORK ANYMORE!!!”

Trump’s suggestion brought about principal indices to rise in early trading, a sharp distinction to how Wall Street numbers plummeted after Trump initially introduced sweeping tariffs.

“Bullish momentum picked up for global stocks after reports emerged that the US is considering reducing tariffs on Chinese goods to below 60%, a significant pullback from the punitive 100%+ levies imposed earlier,” stated Fawad Razaqzada, a market analyst at City Index, the Guardian reported.

New knowledge emerged that confirmed Chinese shipments to the U.S. fell by 21% in April, which signifies the impact of Trump’s commerce tariffs on China that spurred a commerce battle between the 2 international locations.

In a tit-for-tat measure where Beijing raised its tariffs on American items to 125%, the quantity of shipments from the U.S. also fell by 14%.

“The numbers just confirmed what markets already suspected: Trump’s tariff blitz is biting, and hard. Chinese exports to the U.S. cratered 21% in April, the sharpest drop in years, while exports to ASEAN, Africa, LatAm, and even the EU surged. The global supply chain is being rerouted in real time,” stated Stephen Innes, the managing companion at SPI Asset Management, the Guardian reported.
