Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said Thursday he stays skeptical about claims that ICE operations in town are ending, but credited residents if the drawdown proves true.
“I have proposed, and President Trump has concurred, that this surge operation conclude,” Homan said.
“A significant drawdown has already been under way this week, and will continue through the next week.”
Asked by host Jordan Klepper whether or not he believed the operation was ending, Frey responded with, “I will believe it when I see it.”
The phase follows the deadly ICE shootings of two US residents: Renee Good, a mom of three, and Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse.
“If you’re looking for anybody to give credit to for the end of Operation Metro Surge, for the pressure that was put on the federal government, for these incredible patriotic acts that have taken place over the last month and a half, give it to the 435,000 Minneapolis residents that have stood up,” Frey said.
The mayor described residents’ actions during the federal operation.
“They have been protesting peacefully by the tens of thousands,” he said.
“They’ve been dropping off food for people that are otherwise scared to go outside and leave their homes. They’re watching guard on a daycare.”
Frey concluded, “They are the defenders of this great republic in this moment. They are everything that it means to be American.”
Taking to the YouTube remark part of the interview, viewers reacted.
“Minneapolis is so strong!! Every city needs to stand strong against all this tyranny caused by Trump,” one person wrote.
Another added, “Proud Minnesotan here, we love our neighbors and communities. We have refused to be silent in the face of brutality and human rights violations. If ICE leaves Minnesota, we fear the Administration will just occupy a new city or state. Wherever ICE goes, we will support those communities too. Thanks to everyone in the US and around the world that stood with us. Your messages of support were read, reread, and appreciated!”
“Push for reparations to all the people who have been harmed by ICE. Broken windows and doors; unlawful arrests and detention; costs out of pocket; stolen property from those detained; death or injury from the actions of ICE,” a third wrote.
