Rubio arrives in Israel amid rising tensions | Political News
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a journey to Israel on Sunday as its navy steams forward with its intensifying assaults on northern Gaza, killing at least 13 people while flattening a number of high-rise buildings.
Rubio said his intention during his two-day go to to more and more remoted Israel was to decide its view of a path ahead in Gaza as the warfare approaches its second 12 months, killing more than 64,000 Palestinians.
It comes after Israel’s audacious assault on Hamas leaders in Qatar last week, which fully soured efforts to broker an end to the battle.
It also comes forward of what is predicted to be a heated debate next week about committing to the creation of a Palestinian state, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fiercely opposes.
Rubio’s go to also demonstrated that ties between the U.S. and Israel haven’t soured, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s anger at Netanyahu over the Israeli strike in Doha, which he said the United States wasn’t notified of beforehand.
On Sunday, Netanyahu, Rubio and their wives, along with U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee and his spouse, toured the Western Wall and the excavated tunnels close to it.
“I think his [Rubio’s] visit here is a testament to the durability, the strength of the Israeli-American alliance. It’s as strong and as durable as the stones of the Western Wall we just touched,” Netanyahu said.
On Friday, Rubio and Trump met with Qatar’s prime minister about the fallout from the Israeli operation. The back-to-back conferences with Israel and Qatar illustrate how the Trump administration is attempting to stability relations between key Middle East alliesdespite widespread worldwide condemnation of the assault.
The Doha assault, which killed at least six people, also seems to have ended makes an attempt to secure an Israel-Hamas ceasefire and the release of hostages before the upcoming U.N. General Assembly session, at which the warfare in Gaza is predicted to be a main focus.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s prime minister denounced Israel as overseas ministers from Arab and Muslim nations met Sunday to focus on a potential unified response.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who also serves as overseas minister, said Qatar remained dedicated to working with Egypt and the U.S. to attain a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas warfare, but that Israel’s strike represented “an attack on the principle of mediation itself.”
It comes as the hunger disaster in Gaza continues to exacerbate amid an unrelenting airstrikes on the strip.
