Venezuelan politician Juan Pablo Guanipa was kidnapped just hours after being launched from detention.
According to stories online, Guanipa was taken by armed males sporting civilian garments in the Los Chorros urbanization in Caracas. Guanipa’s son Ramón wrote on X on Sunday, “We denounce that a group of armed individuals intercepted and kidnapped Juan Pablo Guanipa just minutes ago.”
“It was a group of approximately 10 unidentified people. We were able to identify a silver Corolla, a white Range Rover, and a Renault Symbol. We demand IMMEDIATE PROOF OF LIFE and his release.”
The terrifying incident befell nearly immediately after the politician, who is an ally of the opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, was launched from detention, where he had been held for eight months, Ramón said.
“Our entire family will be able to hug again soon,” Ramón wrote on social media, cautioning: “There are still hundreds of Venezuelans unjustly imprisoned.”
Opposition and human rights teams declare that under the management of Nicolas Maduro, political prisoners had been held to stamp out dissent and silence critics. Since the U.S. captured Maduro last month, a number of political prisoners have been launched.
The official account of the Primero Justicia Party, of which Guanipa is a member, commented on the kidnapping of Guanipa, writing, “We announce to the country that our national leader, Juan Pablo Guanipa, has just been kidnapped by the repressive forces of the dictatorship while he was mobilizing from one location to another.”
“We call on the international community for the immediate release of Juan Pablo Guanipa and for an immediate and unconditional end to the persecution of the opposition,” they added. “Venezuela is determined to change and yearns for justice.”
Guanipa was captured by Venezuela’s security forces and detained in May 2025, after he was accused of terrorism and treason for difficult the consequence of the 2024 election, which noticed Maduro re-elected.
