Florida state workers are set to obtain a five-day weekend and two four-day weekends during the upcoming holiday season.

On November 17, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced in a press release that state workplaces would also shut down on November 26 – the Wednesday before Thanksgiving – plus the Fridays following Christmas and New Year’s Day, particularly December 26 and January 2.
The Republican governor remarked in the assertion, “Our state employees have worked hard throughout the year.

Throughout his tenure, DeSantis has shown generosity toward state employees, granting extended holiday weekends when circumstances allow. Earlier this year, he authorized the closure of state offices on Thursday, July 3, ahead of Independence Day celebrations.
However, according to the Tallahassee Democrat, DeSantis’ generous gesture could mean reduced earnings for certain workers. State law prevents him from extending this benefit to employees categorized as Other Personal Services.
These employees – referred to in Tallahassee as OPS – are part-time staff members brought on to address temporary workforce gaps.
Over 9,900 OPS workers are employed by 30 state agencies, making up about 10% of the lowest-paid state workers, according to the Department of Management Services Annual Workforce report.
During Trump’s second term, state workers have been among the most vulnerable, with hundreds of thousands of federal civil service layoffs announced by the administration.
The majority of these layoffs were credited to Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, previously headed by Tesla founder Elon Musk, who later distanced himself from the president after stepping down.
Trump and Governor DeSantis have had a sophisticated relationship, characterised by a fierce public rivalry as DeSantis vied for the Republican nomination against Trump in 2024.
However, since Trump’s second time period started, DeSantis has urged Republicans to back Trump and has shown his help at the state stage.
