BBC One’s The Traitors has made its eagerly awaited comeback to tv screens, that includes a contemporary batch of 22 hopefuls prepared to battle it out in Series 4.

The contestants have once more been introduced to Scotland to check their talents, divided between Faithfuls and Traitors, with the latter striving to keep their true identities hidden.

The beloved recreation show made its return to BBC One on New Year’s Day, with presenter Claudia Winkleman choosing her trio of Traitors – Hugo Lodge, Stephen Libby and Rachel Duffy.

Claudia also revealed a vital twist for this 12 months’s collection. Within moments of the contemporary episode starting, she announced: “Before you take the Traitor’s Oath, I imagine you’re wondering why this cloak is a different colour. I can now reveal you have a special role…you are my Secret Traitor.”

She subsequently added: ” I’m going to do something else. I’m also going to pick a Secret Traitor. Nobody will know who that is, not the Traitors and not even you. It’s naughty, isn’t it.”

Hugo is a 51-year-old barrister born in Cardiff who at the moment resides in London. A self-confessed superfan, Hugo confessed he is “obsessed” with The Traitors, stating: “I think I’ve seen every episode in the English language, UK, US, Australia and New Zealand.”

On the programme, Hugo confessed he can be “upfront” about revealing his career, hoping to leverage it to his benefit as he explained: “I’m an excellent judge of character and I’ll use that in this game.”

As a barrister, Hugo acknowledged he possesses a strong poker face, explaining: “So, I mean I’m a barrister and I have to stand up in front of a jury and be a kind of big cuddly teddy bear, so you have to believe what you’re saying because people can pick up if you’re all fidgety. So yes, I hope so, because it’s important for my job.”

Hugo has authored his own publications and has practised across the globe, including Dubai and the Cayman Islands, experiences Wales Online. According to his web site biography, he specialises primarily in “targeted financial sanctions advice, anti-money laundering, and other forms of financial regulation and criminal allegations”.

Discussing his strategy, Hugo revealed: “Well, that will depend on whether I get a tap on the shoulder and whether I’m a Traitor or not. Because it’s series four, I think everyone tries to hide in the middle of the pack and everyone tries to keep a low profile.”

He continued by saying he’ll “hide in plain sight”, including: “I’m going to be myself and I’m going to be quite out there telling stories, telling jokes and singing. I suppose I’ll be one of the older ones at 51, so I’m going to be very positive and try keep things upbeat and happy.”

Hugo’s Instagram deal with seems to be @hugodbailey and is even adopted by Claudia herself. On the first day of the 12 months, he posted: “Delighted to confirm I’m a cast member for UK series 4 @thetraitorsukofficial @thetraitorsglobal @bbc @bbciplayer @bbcsounds.”

The 51-year-old revealed that if he had been victorious, he would donate to human rights charity Amnesty International, stating: “They do fantastic work and if ever I get the chance to support them, I do.”

Hugo shared his top methods for detecting dishonesty, confessing that people have “tells”. He identified that “touching your face is a classic one”, along with “not looking people straight in the eye.”
