The Federal Aviation Administration closed its airspace in El Paso, Texas on Wednesday because the Pentagon allowed U.S Customs and Border Protection to use an anti-drone laser earlier this week, two nameless sources said.
The FAA said it might shut down all flight visitors over El Paso and Santa Teresa, New Mexico for 10 days from 11:30 p.m. MST on Feb. 10 through 11:30 p.m. MST on Feb. 20 but the restriction has been lifted after a few hours. The restriction was carried out for “special security reasons,” according to the FAA.
The Trump administration said this occurred because the FAA and the Pentagon labored to halt an incursion by Mexican cartel drones, according to the nameless sources who spoke to the Associated Press.
Because of miscommunication the airspace was closed. The nameless source said the laser was deployed close to Fort Bliss without coordinating with the FAA and the airspace was closed for security. Others told the AP the technology was used before a assembly between the Pentagon and FAA to focus on the issue.
Seven arrivals and seven departures from the El Paso airport had been cancelled but regular flights resumed afterwards, the AP reported.
El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego said in a Facebook post on Wednesday that he wasn’t told about the FAA’s determination.
“As the head of emergency management for El Paso County pursuant to Chapter 418, Section 418.1015 of the Texas Government Code, I was not informed of today’s FAA decision to close the airspace at El Paso International Airport,” Samaniego wrote. “The absence of prior communication contributed to significant concern and confusion within the community, as such actions have direct implications for public awareness, safety coordination, and local emergency management response efforts.”
Couple Jorge Rueda, 20, and Yamilexi Meza, 21, from Las Cruces, New Mexico, had their morning flight to Portland, Oregon, canceled, the AP reported. It cut into their Valentine’s Day weekend journey. The couple had been later booked on an night flight from El Paso.
Rueda said he was glad that the restriction of “10 days turned into two hours.”
