Arnold Palmers daughter slammed Trump for fawning | Golf News
Donald Trump’s vulgar anecdote about Arnold Palmer’s manhood backfired, with “The King’s” daughter accusing the president of being “disrespectful and inappropriate.”
Trump was on the marketing campaign path a couple of weeks before 2024 when he held an event at the airport named after Palmer in his hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
In trademark Trump fashion, he tried to appeal those in attendance with tales of his interactions with Palmer, but he crossed the road of decency when he mentioned the dimensions of Palmer’s manhood.
“This is a guy that was all man,” Trump remarked while speaking about Palmer. “This man was strong and tough, and … when he took showers with the other pros, they came out of there — they said, ‘Oh my God. That’s unbelievable.’”
Trump’s feedback had been widely deemed inappropriate, and the seven-time major champion’s daughter, Peg Palmer-Wears, made her displeasure clear.
“Being at the airport, which is named for my dad, where he flew out of to go to work every day or every week, you know, to come there and talk about … hackneyed anecdotes from the locker room … seemed disrespectful and inappropriate to me,” she told ABC News.
Palmer-Wears said Trump had “appropriated someone he admires to bolster his own image,” and that “people deserve better.”
She said Trump, who defeated former Vice President Kamala Harris a few weeks later to return to the White House, used her father to distract from policy issues.
“The people coming to these rallies deserve substance about plans Trump has as a candidate, if he could elucidate on some of the threats he’s made to people,” she said.
“I mean, these are important issues that should be discussed for people when they’re getting ready to vote, and using my dad to cover over the important things just seems unacceptable to me.”
Palmer, who died aged 87 in 2016, will have his legacy honored this week with the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which tees off at Bay Hill near Orlando, Florida, on Thursday.
Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion, and he said: “It’s definitely a place I always enjoy coming back and playing.
“Obviously, with Mr. Palmer’s legacy and the way the golf course is, it’s very challenging, and so it’s always a fun test for us as players. So, yeah, it’s good to be back, for sure.”
