One of the best TV reveals of 2024 has someway develop into even better with the fifth season. MI5 thriller Slow Horses has returned to screens with a excellent Rotten Tomatoes rating after rave reviews from critics. The spy drama, based on Mick Herron’s Slough House novels, stars Harry Potter actor Gary Oldman as chief Jackson Lamb.

It follows a dysfunctional crew of British intelligence brokers working in a division not-so-affectionately recognized as Slough House. After being exiled to the undesirable MI5 division due to their career-ending errors, they work to navigate the intelligence world’s smoke and mirrors to defend the nation.

As effectively as Gary, the solid stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves, Rosalind Eleazar and Christopher Chung, who takes the lead for the latest installment.

Slow Horses season 1 premiered in April 2022, with the second and third seasons following in December 2022 and November 2023. While the first and third obtained near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes scores, the second and fourth, which landed on screens last year, achieved 100%.

At the time, it set a new record for Apple TV+, as the 100% Rotten Tomatoes score for season four meant the show has never dipped below 98% since its launch, making it officially the streamer’s highest-rated show ever.

Earlier seasons were branded a “masterpiece” by followers, who called it a “must-watch” with a “sublime” solid.

The fourth was also ranked Rotten Tomatoes’ best TV show of 2024, and the fifth is set to do the same, if early reviews are something to go by.

A critic from The Age wrote: “It’s this mix of high-octane action, humour – sometimes juvenile, sometimes sophisticated, always dark – and human frailty that makes Slow Horses such a compelling watch.”

Another review read: “And, after a pretty good but not great season four, season five is a true tour de force that gives every member of Slough House a chance to shine.”

“Slow Horses, Season 5, continues to test the limits of audience expectations, and comes one step closer to becoming truly iconic,” a third wrote.

A Metro critic wrote: “I can’t think of a thing I didn’t like about it. The cast is brilliant, the story’s engaging, and the dialogue sharper than ever.”

Meanwhile a FandomWire reviewer said: “For those worrying that Slow Horses is moving too expediently for its own good, season 5 shows that there’s no slowing down, and television is all the better for it.”

Season six of Slow Horses has already been confirmed, with Gary beforehand telling Deadline: “That is truly the wonderful gift that keeps on giving.

“I just adore the hell out of it, and the people. It is just such a wonderful thing really to be part of.”
