Californias Newsom Vies for Relevance, Green Cred

One of the most seen actions after the U.S. Senate failed to cross the House model of a invoice to fund the Department of Homeland Security this week was Democrats swiftly hightailing it out of Washington, D.C., and heading to Europe for the 62nd Munich Security Conference.

Senate Dems weren’t the only ones eagar to make an look at the yearly convention, though, and there’s a simple motive for that. In its report, GWN describes the European gathering as a common pit stop for “politicians to test the foreign policy waters and elevate their own profiles on the international stage ahead of White House runs.”

Elissa Slotkin and the state’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer; and former RI governor and commerce secretary during the Biden administration, Gina Raimondo.

Readers are possible unsurprised to see Newsom’s identify among those cozying up to Europeans of a likeminded progressive bent, since he’s somebody who hasn’t precisely been quiet about pursuing a potential run for the White House in the future.

“Donald Trump is temporary. He’ll be gone in three years,” said Newsom during a panel on climate change. “California is a stable and reliable partner in this space. And it’s important for folks to understand the temporary nature of this current administration in relationship to the issue.”

In a new interview aired live from Munich with GWN’s “The Arena” and anchor Kasie Hunt, Newsom started by repeating that line about Trump when requested to clarify why he selected to attend the Munich convention:

Well, I’m right here in many respects to remind everybody that Trump is short-term.  He’ll be gone in a matter of years.  States like California are everlasting.  We’re dependable, secure companions.

He went on to refer to the Trump administration’s rescinding of the endangerment discovering, the Holy Grail of U.S. climate bureaucrats put in place during the Obama period, which made carbon dioxide a pollutant.

“We saw what Trump just did with the endangerment finding, completely rolling back progress of the last half century, wants to recreate the 19th Century,” Newsom said. “And we want to transform our economy.  We want to dominate in the next great global economy, low carbon, green growth.  And I’m reminding world leaders of that.”

He spoke about whether or not he believes world leaders “still think that America is the leader of the free world”:

No. They see us as a wrecking ball. They see us as unreliable.  And — and a lot of them assume irrevocable, they do not assume we’ll ever come back to our authentic type.

Newsom added that he is “not as convinced” that it is irrevocable, and that Democrats can reestablish trust “once Trump’s done”: in other phrases, if a Democrat majority retakes the House and Senate, along with returning to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: 

 I’m not as satisfied of that. Whatever occurs, we will undo, we will shape-shift (ph), we will repair it. And while trust is troublesome to re-establish, there’s an excessive amount of at stake in a multinational — from a multi-international perspective that we’ve a lot of work to do once Trump’s accomplished.  And I believe it may — it isn’t going to be undone completely, from my perspective.  

Later in the interview, the host introduced up the other Democrats wanting to burnish their overseas coverage credentials, declaring Ocasio-Cortez particularly. She requested Newsom, “She’s been on the left of the Democratic Party. Is that the direction that you think your party should go if they want to win the presidential election in 2028?”

He answered: 

Well, I believe, you realize, we’ll see where issues end up. I imply, at the second, that’s the zeitgeist. I imply, you realize, we’re in this resistance mindset. People need us to be strong. People need us to push back, maintain the road, call it out, call balls and strikes. And actually what I’ve been doing. And progressive insurance policies have labored in sure components of the nation. But we’ll see.  Again, it is a little too early to determine that out.  

Then he continued, pointing to when he thinks the timeline for the “process” of ’28 begins:

I say this often about Trump, in many methods, the impediment is the best way. What stands in the best way turns into the best way. Trump will shape-shift, where in the end we — we end up as it relates to what — what taste Democrat, what that second represents, what that second requires of the Democratic Party, after the midterms, that course of begins.  

When Hunt requested him instantly about whether or not he’ll run for president, Gov. Newsom said:

Look, I truthfully do not know.  I actually do not. But I’m making an attempt to be accountable to the world I’m residing in. I do not need to live with any regrets. I do not need to say I may’ve, would’ve, ought to’ve and been on some panel or go on your show as one of those, you realize, ex-politicians.  

I’m placing that all on the road. I would like to run 110-yard sprint as governor. You noticed that last 12 months with Prop 50. You see that on our social media, the work we’re doing every day back home.  

But, look, this second requires, I believe, management. It requires a counter-narrative. Trump doesn’t symbolize the bulk of Americans. He’s the most historic president in our lifetime — traditionally unpopular.  And the remaining of the world wants to perceive that.  

As talked about at the top, others have been wanting to ingratiate themselves to the EU leaders, embrace Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Kelly, who have been only too keen to badmouth our nation and Pres. Trump while abroad, as these clips show
