Frustrated Trump urged Zelensky to go on | Political News

New experiences show that U.S. President Donald Trump urged his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, to go on the offensive during a telephone call on Independence Day.

According to a Ukrainian official, Trump requested Zelensky if he and Ukraine have been in a place to assault the Russian capital. “Volodymyr, are you able to hit Moscow?… Can you hit St Petersburg too?” Trump reportedly requested on the call. The Ukrainian president replied: “Absolutely. We can if you give us the weapons.”

It was reported that, following Zelensky’s call with Trump, Kyiv received a list from US aides with various long-range strike systems that would be made available through third-party transfers. It was later reported that Trump clarified that he told Zelensky not to attack the Russian capital. Trump also denied that he would supply long-range weaponry.

TRUMP’S ALLIANCE

The call between the two happened 11 days before Trump, while meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, promised to send weapons to Ukraine as long as Europe promised to pay for them. “We made a deal today where we are going to be sending them weapons and they’re gonna be paying for them,” Trump said.

“The United States will not be making any payment. We’re not buying it, but we will manufacture it, and they will be paying for it,” the president added. The president also said he would give Russia a 50-day deadline to return to the negotiating table or the U.S. will slap a secondary 100% tariff on the country.

DON’T MISS:

“We are going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days,” Trump told reporters Monday from the Oval Office. When asked to clarify about the deadline, Trump told reporters: “I think it’s a very short period of time. I have been involved in this not very long. This is a Biden war, a Democrat war, not a Republican or Trump war.”

The conference was held after Trump met with Rutte on Monday morning, as tensions escalate in Ukraine, with four killed earlier in the day in Ukraine‘s Sumy region by Russian airstrikes, and hope for a ceasefire dwindles, with the increasing ire of Trump.

Trump alluded to a weapons deal with NATO last week after facing fierce criticism following a weapons shipment to Kyiv being halted. The move was met with applause by Russian President Vladimir Putin but was subject to criticism by U.S. lawmakers across the aisle. The meeting with Rutte came after Trump sent Zelensky Patriot missile defense systems.

The sudden return to best friend status with Ukraine comes as Trump expressed his disappointment with Putin in recent weeks. “I’m disappointed in Russia, but we’ll see what happens over the next couple of weeks,” Trump informed NBC News final week.
