Five iconic music channels in the UK are set to go off air in a major shakeup by its broadcaster, experiences say. MTV is to shut all of its music channels across the world, besides in the US, it’s claimed.

MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and Live HD are all reportedly set to close later this 12 months in the UK after being stung by the increase in streaming. However, the flagship MTV channel, which only broadcasts actuality TV exhibits, will stay on air. The large shakeup of the music TV giant’s channels comes as half of cuts following a company merger, it’s said.

The American broadcaster is due to affirm the adjustments after a deal between Paramount Global and Skydance Media was finalised last 12 months, according to The Sun which broke the story.

Stations in Asia, Australia and Latin America are also reportedly set to be axed, with a source telling the newspaper that MTV has been “a victim of the rise of streaming”.

“It’s a dark day for the music industry,” the source said.

It is said the 5 MTV music channels set to close in the UK will go off air on December 31. MTV told The Sun it had no remark about the channel closures, the newspaper reported.

It comes weeks after it emerged MTV had axed the hit show Catfish after more than a decade on air. The long-running actuality collection grew to become a family title, inspiring spin-offs, worldwide variations and even sparking other documentaries on the subject, including on Netflix.

MTV’s music channels have been a notably important half of popular culture during the Nineties and 2000s.

Over the years, the broadcaster has helped launch the careers of family names including Cat Deeley, Emma Willis and Greg James.
