Poland said its plane intercepted a Russian jet finishing up a mission over the Baltic Sea with its transponder turned off on Wednesday morning.
“Polish fighters intercepted an Il-20 aircraft conducting a reconnaissance mission in international airspace, without a filed flight plan and with its transponder turned off. The aircraft did not violate Polish airspace,” the Polish Army said in a post on X.
Jacek Goryszewski, spokesperson for the Polish army’s operational command, told private broadcaster TVN24 that the incident showed Poland was “vigilant to ensure our airspace is not violated”.
Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this comes as Russian soldiers gained a foothold in the strategic eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk.
He added that Russia had devoted vast numbers of troops to capturing the town, which is a key part of Kyiv’s defensive lines in Donetsk, but that it had so far failed to do so.
“Imagine how many Russian forces are there. But at the same time, they have not achieved the planned result,” he said.
Zelensky’s update got here as Moscow was again focused as half of a broader Ukrainian drone assault for the third night time in a row.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia had tested a Poseidon nuclear-powered super autonomous torpedo and told soliders wounded in the Ukraine war that the test had taken place on Tuesday.
“For the first time, we managed not only to launch it with a launch engine from a provider submarine, but also to launch the nuclear energy unit on which this machine handed a certain quantity of time,” Putin said.
“This is a big success,” Putin said, including that the ability of the Poseidon exceeded the Sarmat intercontinental missile.
