Donald Trump has deflected questions about whether or not Hamas will disarm and Israel will stop its bombing marketing campaign in Gaza, amid uncertainty over the president’s peace proposal.
Trump on Wednesday announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first section of his 20-point peace plan to end the two-year battle. Both sides agreed to pause combating in Gaza so that the remaining hostages will be freed in the approaching days in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
But uncertainty stays about some of the more contentious features of the proposal, including whether or not Hamas will disarm, which it has beforehand refused to do.
Speaking at the White House on Thursday, Trump deflected as he was asked to present readability about whether or not the militant group would disarm.
“What ensures Hamas disarms and that Israel would not resume bombing?” a reporter asked Trump.
“The first thing we’re doing is getting our hostages back. That’s what people wanted more than anything else. They wanted these hostages back that have lived in hell like nobody has ever dreamt possible. After that we’ll see but they’ve agreed to things and I think it’s going to move along pretty well,” Trump replied.
Hamas urged Trump to guarantee that Israel implements “without disavowal or delay” a deal that it said would require the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, the entry of support into the territory and the exchange of prisoners for hostages. A senior Hamas official said the group handed over a listing of Palestinian prisoners who will be launched as half of the settlement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would convene his Cabinet and Israel’s parliament on Thursday to approve the deal.
Hamas intends to release all 20 residing hostages in a matter of days, while the Israeli army will start a withdrawal from the bulk of Gaza, The Associated Press reported.
Under Trump’s plan announced last month, he would chair a “Board of Peace” to supervise the redevelopment of Gaza once ends. The short-term governing committee would also embrace former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
More than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza and almost 170,000 wounded since the battle started in October 2023, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Several Arab states and UN specialists have accused Israel of committing genocide.
