Donald Trump has accused protesters in Los Angeles of being “paid insurrectionists,” as he defended his choice to ship National Guard troops to the town in response to demonstrations against immigration raids.
Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump claimed the protesters had been being paid to incite violence.
“There were certain areas of Los Angeles last night – you could have called it an insurrection. It was terrible. But these are paid insurrectionists. These are paid trouble makers. They get money,” he stated.
The law usually bans home use of federal troops for civilian law enforcement, exterior of exceptions just like the Insurrection Act. Trump has yet to invoke the Act, but stated he wouldn’t hestitate to do so.
“If there’s an insurrection, I would certainly invoke it. We’ll see,” Trump stated. “But I can tell you last night was terrible, and the night before that was terrible.”

Trump on Monday approved the deployment of 2,000 extra National Guard troops to LA, along with 700 marines. It comes after an initial 300 troops arrived in the town on Sunday.
The choice marked the first time in 60 years that a president had activated the National Guard to a state without a request from its governor.
The protests started Friday in downtown Los Angeles after federal immigration authorities arrested more than 40 people across the town.
Clashes broke out between protesters and authorities on Saturday. Agents unleashed tear gasoline, flash-bang explosives and pepper balls, and protesters hurled rocks at Border Patrol vehicles.
California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday stated he deliberate to file a lawsuit against the deployment, calling it an “outrageous overreach” that was stoking “terror” among residents.
“This is a manufactured crisis. He is creating fear and terror to take over a state militia and violate the U.S. constitution,” Newsom wrote on X.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that the state would search a court order declaring the president’s federalizing of the guard was illegal and a restraining order to stop the deployment.
Trump on Monday claimed that Los Angeles would have been “completely obliterated” if he had not deployed the Guard.
