Trump team declares war on Biden’s ‘woke’ Calibri | Political News
President Donald Trump has seemingly declared war on the “woke” Calibri font used by former President Joe Biden’s administration, and opting to use the Times New Roman font.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged on Wednesday that Calibri was “informal” and would therefore be dropped by the division. Rubio insisted that Times New Roman was more conventional and could be reinstated.
In an “Action Request” obtained by The New York Times, Secretary Rubio commented that Calibri was “informal” in contrast to serif typefaces, such as Times New Roman, and allegedly clashed with the division’s letterhead. The Daily Express U.S. reached out to the State Department for remark.
Rubio allegedly added that Times New Roman would “restore decorum and professionalism to the division’s written work. “According to The Telegraph, the action was titled, “Return to Tradition: Times New Roman 14-Point Font Required for All Department Paper.”
According to the outlet, the order blamed “radical” DEI and accessibility programs on the adoption of Calibri. It was reported that the font rose to prominence in 2023 when then-Secretary of State Anthony Blinken adopted it following a recommendation from the State Department.
According to the since-disbanded State Department’s DEI office, the sans-serif typeface was seen as having a softer and more modern look with wider spacing. The font was also perceived as more accessible for readers with dyslexia or low vision.
It was also stated that the font works better for individuals who use assistive technology, such as screen readers. It was reported that Times New Roman is perceived as a more classical style of typing.
Rubio added that Times New Roman was “usually perceived to connote custom, formality, and ceremony.” The Secretary of State pointed to the fact that both the White House and the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as the script on the side of Air Force One.
While the Trump administrator stated the font selection “was not among the division’s most unlawful, immoral, radical or wasteful situations of [diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility],” Rubio argued that “accessibility-based doc remediation circumstances” at the department had not declined.

“Switching to Calibri achieved nothing besides the degradation of the division’s official correspondence,” Rubio added. Prior to the adoption of Times New Roman in 2004, the State Department used Courier New as its official font.
The swap back to the more classical font comes as Trump called for a more classical model in all authorities buildings ought to be constructed in the classical Greco-Roman model. Trump signed the order in August, mentioning the Supreme Court and U.S. Capitol as symbols.
