Trumps new micro nuclear reactor ready to take | Political News
One of President Donald Trump’s new micro-nuclear reactors is ready for transportation, the Department of Defense said.
The next-generation power source was loaded aboard a C-17 Globemaster III plane following the president’s govt orders to reshape and modernise America’s nuclear power. The Ward 250 is a 5 megawatt nuclear reactor, small enough to match into the back of a transport plane, that may theoretically energy about 5,000 properties.
For navy use, such a reactor may present power security on a base, making certain the mission there would not rely on the civilian energy grid. Overseas, such a reactor would imply U.S. forces may operate without the worry of an enemy cutting fuel provides.
The DOD said, “A reactor such as the Ward 250 also means greater energy security for the entire United States. It is firmly in line with President Donald J. Trump’s executive orders to reshape and modernise America’s nuclear energy landscape.”
The president signed 4 govt orders in May 2025 designed to advance America’s nuclear power posture. Those embody “Reinvigorating the Nuclear Industrial Base,” “Reforming Nuclear Reactor Testing at the Department of Energy,” “Ordering the Reform of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission,” and “Deploying Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technologies for National Security.”
Michael P. Duffey, the undersecretary of battle for acquisition and sustainment, said the partnership between the Defense and Energy Departments is crucial to advancing the president’s nuclear power initiatives.
“It’s clear to me that advancing President Trump’s priority on nuclear energy depends on close coordination between the Department of Energy and the Department of War,” Duffey said.
“This partnership ensures advanced nuclear technologies are developed, evaluated, and deployed in ways that strengthen energy resilience and national security.”
The future of warfare is energy-intensive, he said, and contains AI data centres, directed-energy weapons, and space and cyber infrastructure.
The civilian energy grid was not constructed for that, and so the Defense Department will need to construct its own power infrastructure.
