President Donald Trump is “very worried about nuclear war”, Melinda Crane, an American journalist, said while showing on DW News’ The International Talk Show.

“If Putin can form of get to him on that stage, Putin could also be back in favor“, Crane said.

In a column for The Hill, John Fairlamb, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, wrote: “New START is the only U.S.-Russia nuclear weapons treaty still in effect and when it expires, there will be no limits on Russian strategic systems and no inspection regime to verify what types and numbers of strategic systems the Russians are deploying.”

Fairlamb was referring to the only nuclear weapons limitation settlement still in drive, which is expiring on Feb. 5, 2026.

On Monday, President Putin supplied to prolong the treaty for one 12 months if the U.S. agreed to do the same.

“The president is aware of this offer extended by President Putin, and I’ll let him comment on it later. I think it sounds pretty good, but he wants to make some comments on that himself,” spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told reporters.

“Russia is prepared to continue adhering to the central quantitative limitations of the New START Treaty for one year after February 5, 2026,” when it expires, Putin said, including that Moscow will later determine on persevering with restrictions relying on the state of affairs.

The New START Treaty, which was first enforced in 2011, limits the quantity of strategic nuclear warheads deployed by Moscow and Washington to a most of 1,550 each. The treaty also limits the quantity of launchers and nuclear-capable heavy bombers to 800 and creates a mutual inspection and notification regime.

President Trump told reporters that denuclearization is “a big aim.”

Earlier this week President Trump confirmed a change in his stance on Russia–Ukraine war. After assembly Ukranian President Zelenskyy he said on Tuesday that he believes Ukraine can win the war and take back all the misplaced territory.

The remarks are a shift from his earlier stance that Zelensky “doesn’t have the cards”, arguing that time shouldn’t be on Ukraine‘s facet and that Russia is profitable the war. He also urged Zelensky to make territorial concessions to Russia to attain a deal that would end the four-year-old battle.
