Noem awards select TSA agents $10,000 bonuses for | Political News


Select TSA agents who confirmed “exemplary service” during the 43-day authorities shutdown might be awarded $10,000 bonuses, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Thursday.

Noem personally handed out checks to about 20 TSA staff at a press convention in Houston, home to the George Bush Intercontinental Airport where TSA wait instances lasted as long as 4 and a half hours. Travelers missed flights while TSA agents incomes an average of $26 an hour labored without pay.

“We will be continuing to not only recognize employees across the country, but we will be looking at every single TSA official who helped serve during this governmental shutdown,” Noem said, “and do what we can to help recognize that and help them financially with a bonus check to get them and their families back on their feet.”

The bonus checks might be added on top of the TSA agents’ back pay, Noem said, “for stepping up, taking on extra shifts, for showing up each and every day.”

There were “tens of thousands of individuals who stepped up and continued to serve” during the last six weeks, Noem said.

“We’re going to look at every individual that did exceptional service during this period of time when there were so many hardships,” she said.

Noem did not make it immediately clear which TSA agents would be exempt from receiving the bonus checks.

President Donald Trump said Monday that he would recommend similar $10,000 bonuses for air traffic controllers who continued to work during the shutdown but said pay for others who called out of work would be “substantially docked.”

Staffing shortages for air site visitors control staff and extreme climate situations led to tens of 1000’s of flight cancellations since the shutdown began on Oct. 1.

But despite the shutdown ending, airways warned that vacationers ought to still anticipate disruptions.

The Federal Aviation Administration was required to cut flights to 8% Thursday and 10% for Friday. The FAA also beforehand ordered flight reductions on Nov. 7 at 40 major airports due to staffing shortages.
