intimacy offender Jeffrey Epstein believed British media mogul Sir Robert Maxwell, the daddy of his business accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, was killed by the Israeli intelligence company, Mossad, in the latest trove of paperwork launched by the Justice Department.

Epstein’s perception about Maxwell’s death was revealed in a 2018 electronic mail to an unknown recipient, where he extensively quoted the 2002 guide “The Assassination of Robert Maxwell: Israel’s Super Spy,” by Gordon Thomas and Martin Dillon, where they argue that the magnate was assassinated by the state of Israel because he threatened to reveal the work he had completed for them.

In order to keep his silence, the guide suggests, Maxwell demanded that Israeli spymasters pay him £400 million.

“He told them that unless they gave him £400 million to save his crumbling empire, he would expose all he had done for them,” the excerpt from the guide that Epstein quoted reads. “In that time, he had free access to Margaret Thatcher’s Downing Street, Ronald Reagan’s White House, to the Kremlin and to the corridors of power throughout Europe.”

“Maxwell passed on all the secrets he learned to Mossad in Tel Aviv. In turn, they tolerated his excesses, vanities, and insatiable appetite for a luxurious lifestyle and women,” the passage continues. “He told his controllers who they should target and how they should do it. He appointed himself Israel’s unofficial ambassador to the Soviet Bloc.”

Maxwell died on Nov. 5, 1991, when he was 68 years outdated, after he fell overboard from his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, close to the Canary Islands. Official experiences deemed his death as the outcome of a coronary heart assault mixed with unintentional drowning.

According to the guide, however, a four-man hit squad was deployed to the Canaries to kill Maxwell. During the mission, the boys approached Maxwell’s yacht and climbed aboard for what the media mogul believed to be a secret assembly to talk about cost. However, as they greeted each other, two of the boys injected a syring into his neck to immobilise him, before they lowered him to the water for drowning.

Shortly after his death, officers found that Maxwell had embezzled roughly £400 million from the Mirror Group Newspapers pension fund to assist his failing business empire, which was £2 billion in debt.

Maxwell’s death has beforehand been questioned, with some of his workers believing there is likely to be more to the story.

“He was a man who could not face the ignominy of jail, of being shown to be a liar and a thief. And he very much knew that was coming,” says Roy Greenslade, a former editor of the Daily Mirror, one of Maxwell’s newspapers, told The Guardian in 2019. “So I am a suicide theorist. I believe Maxwell threw himself off.”

Meanwhile, one of the Daily Mirror’s senior photographers at the time, Ken Lennox, who noticed Maxwell’s bare corpse after it was pulled from the sea, told the publication that he was satisfied it was an accident.

“He used to get up at night and pee over the stern of the ship. Everybody knew this. And he weighed about 22 stone [308 lbs] at this time. The railings were wire. So I think he lost his balance, because he was very top-heavy,” Lennox said. “He was Teflon man. I don’t think he committed suicide.”

Maxwell’s funeral was held in Jerusalem at the sacred Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery. It has often been described as a state funeral, given that top Israeli dignitaries attended the ceremony, including Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir and President Chaim Herzog.

Epstein and Maxwell’s daughter, Ghislaine Maxwell, would construct a relationship soon after the media mogul’s death. In 2022, Ghislaine was sentenced to 20 years in prison for her position in Epstein’s inappropriate exploitation scheme over the course of a decade. She was charged with conspiracy to entice minors to journey to have interaction in unlawful intercourse acts, conspiracy to transport minors to take part in unlawful intercourse acts, transporting a minor to take part in unlawful intercourse acts, intercourse trafficking conspiracy, and intercourse trafficking of a minor.
