Sky News flooded with 1,300 Ofcom complaints after Gaza | UK News

Sky News has been flooded with Ofcom complaints after Samantha Washington was accused of making a “misrepresentative” remark about the Madleen. The channel has been hit with 1,270 complaints after Samantha sparked backlash during a section.

Ofcom confirmed the complaints had been “related to a section of the programme on the Madleen, a vessel trying to deliver aid to Gaza. Complainants alleged that a comment by the presenter misrepresented the mission’s peaceful nature.” The complaints relate to the show on Saturday June 7, with Samantha interviewing activist Thiago Avila who was onboard the Madleen alongside Greta Thunberg, which was carrying assist to Gaza. Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the organisation accountable for the yacht, mentioned it was carrying humanitarian assist and was “prepared for the possibility of an Israeli attack”, claimed that it was “forcibly intercepted” by Israeli officers at roughly 160 nautical miles from the Gaza coast.

Thunberg posted a video on X, previously recognized as Twitter, claiming she had been “kidnapped”. However, she was shortly launched and put back on a airplane, with photographs of the journey being shared on social media.

She added: “I urge all my friends, family and comrades to put pressure on the Swedish government to release me and the others as soon as possible.”

The activist later spoke on digicam at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris as she referred to as for the release of the opposite activists who had been detained aboard the Freedom Flotilla. She referred to as the detention with the IDF as “quite chaotic and uncertain” state of affairs during the detention, but mentioned it was “absolutely nothing compared to what people are going through in Palestine and especially Gaza right now”.

Thunberg added: “We were well aware of the risks of this mission. The aim was to get to Gaza and to be able to distribute the aid.”

Israel Katz, Israel‘s Minister of Defence, mentioned on social media that it was a “hate flotilla”. He mentioned: “I’ve instructed the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] to act to prevent the ‘Madeleine’ hate flotilla from reaching the shores of Gaza – and to take whatever measures are necessary to that end.” He sensationally then claimed that members of the crew had been “anti-Semitic”.

He wrote: “To the anti-Semitic Greta and her fellow Hamas propaganda spokespeople, I say clearly: You should turn back – because you will not reach Gaza. Israel will act against any attempt to break the blockade or assist terrorist organisations – at sea, in the air, and on land.” The Palestinian defence ministry mentioned that the activists’ actions had been “noble” and mentioned it “salutes the international solidarity activists aboard the ship attempting to break the siege on the Gaza Strip”.
