And, now, she’s bringing this one-of-a-kind, genre-crossing, boundary-pushing live show to the Bronx.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, Sheila E. is scheduled to headline at the Lehman Performing Arts Center. And, as always, she’s excited to take the stage in the City.
“Everything about the Bronx is special,” she smiled. “The people, the community, the food, the music. It feels like a second home to me because of the family feel, familiarity and community.”

Sheila E. new music
On April 5, 2024, Sheila E. launched her ninth studio album “Bailar.”
The Grammy-winning document is a straight dance celebration from its slinky opener “Anacaona” that includes Rubén Blades to the bouncy fianle “Descarga” which is a collaboration with José Alberto “El Canario” and her father Pete Escovedo.
Really though, the offering never takes a minute to slow down as the percussion, horns and crooning come at full pace for all of “Bailar’s” 45-minute runtime.

Behind the scenes with Sheila E.
Ahead of the upcoming run, The Post spoke with Escovedo at size about her wide-ranging, spectacular profession. Here’s what she had to say.
You’ve been touring commonly for over 40 years. What retains you coming back to the stage?
The people keep me coming. I really like what I get to do and I really like that I can bless at least one individual every single day and that is my job.

I used to be trying out your setlist from past exhibits and I see that you guys work medleys into the live exhibits. Can you give us a style of what to anticipate from a medley at an upcoming show on this run?
I don’t know yet because at the last minute, I’ll change it. When we do soundcheck, I’ll just go, ‘let’s do this and let’s take this music out. It all comes down to the vibe of the room.
I really like doing medleys because I can get more songs out of medleys doing a verse and refrain and transfer on to the next part of a music and it’s enjoyable to give you the chance to do that. I only do full music once in a great while, and there’s only a few that I do your complete music.
After the second refrain, I’m I’m some other place, I’m like, let’s go. It’s a journey.
I liked “Bailar.” It’s bombastic, it’s enjoyable, But I noticed that you’d never put out a salsa document before. What drew you to the style for your latest document?
I’ve been listening to salsa my entire life. My dad is a Latin jazz artist and he introduced in so a lot music when we had been growing up. So, moreover him being Latin jazz artist, there was salsa in the home. He introduced in Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Mongo Santamaría, Gran Combo, the listing goes on.
Later on in life, I ended up enjoying with these people and didn’t notice I hadn’t finished a salsa document. After that, it took two or three years speaking about the album to carry it to fruition.
To win my first Grammy doing one thing no one anticipated me to do was superior.
Is there a music that you really need to put your own spin on next?
I haven’t thought about it. I just know that I’m prepared to do the next document and there’s tons of music because I’ve so a lot music that’s just sitting there. That’s how we flipped some of the salsa songs. They had been going to be on my R&B album and we turned them into salsa.
It’s my own twist on the style because I added my little taste of Bay Area with a little bit of funk, some backbeat enjoying drums, people don’t anticipate you to do that either.
What’s the craziest factor that’s occurred in a live show of yours?
One time, I used to be onstage and half of the stage was coming aside over my head and a piece of the signal above me fell and went proper into my head. Thank God, it wasn’t a lot of blood.
And you went on with the show that evening?
Oh, yeah.
You had been the music director on Magic Johnson’s ‘The Magic Hour.’ Do you’ve gotten any great behind the scenes tales from the show?
We had a actually good time. I employed my brother, my pals, we needed it to be a household vibe and make him comfy.
This was his first time as a host of a show. But it’s attention-grabbing because we always really feel like God places us in locations that he needs us to be, whether or not it’s short-lived or not. And there was a younger woman there that had cancer. So, we prayed for her.
We felt that was why we had been despatched there to be there on tv for Magic but actually the blessing was for us to give you the chance to pray for that younger woman. Years later, we discovered she was cancer-free. So for us, it was actually about that.
You had a number of stints with Ringo’s All Star Band. What was it like touring with him? Who was in your group at the time?
To meet Ringo and have him inform me I’m the drummer of the band was wonderful.
So, I did my homework and was prepared to play. I bear in mind Greg Lake was a little sarcastic with me. And, on the first day at rehearsal, he requested me if I had ever performed rock and roll. And I used to be like, “really?” So, I performed this music he did with Emerson, Lake Palmer, and I performed so laborious.
After we had been finished, I stood up, threw my sticks up in the air and walked away. Ringo had his arms folded like “she told you.”
I had a blast and so far I’ve been the only lady that’s carried out in that group thus far so I call myself The Beatle-ette.
