Major Airport Flooded Leaving Passengers Stranded for Hours | Latest Travel News
Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport was pressured to shut down due to flooding Sunday night time after major storms hit the capital metropolis.
Dozens of flights have been diverted after the Mexico City authorities issued a purple alert. Nearly 100 other flights have been canceled as “air operations were suspended” starting just before 8 p.m. local time.
The airport reported between two and three inches of rain.
“In order not to compromise operational safety, the aviation authority ordered the suspension of takeoff and landing operations for about four hours to allow for the removal of water left by the torrential rain,” a assertion shared via X read. “The intensity of the unusual storm caused various areas of the terminal buildings to also be affected, collapsing the storm drainage system, despite the fact that some areas had completed maintenance work in 2024 and at the beginning of this year.”
Nearly 15,000 passengers have been affected by the closure, with the airport reportedly reopening after midnight.

American Airlines, which diverted some flights to Dallas, said in a assertion, “Safety is our top priority and we thank our customers for their patience.”
Passengers affected by the shutdown took to social media to air their frustrations with one en route from Villahermosa, Mexico, claiming to have been “diverted to Oaxaca.”
“We were stuck there for almost 5 hours,” the passenger said.
“We are stuck on the plane that was diverted to Acapulco. They won’t let us off the plane because there are no immigration agents (we’re on an international flight) and they say there isn’t enough accommodation in Acapulco,” another wrote. “There’s no more water on the plane, and we have at least 3 hours left.”
Mexico City is presently in its wet season which generally lasts from early June to September with afternoon thunderstorms being common.
